The gameplay of God of War: Chains of Olympus resembles the previous installments. It is a single-player video game featuring a fixed camera that shows athird-person view. The player controls the game's protagonist Kratos in a combination of combat, both normal and quick time, with platforming and puzzle gameelements. The player guides Kratos through a long series of tests, trials and mazes to achieve goals.[2][3] His main weapons are a pair of double-chained blades called the Blades of Chaos. As the game progresses, Kratos acquires new weapons—the Sun Shield and Gauntlet of Zeus.[2] Kratos also uses magical abilities, including the Efreet, the Light of Dawn, Charon's Wrath and acquires the relic Triton's Lance, which allows him to breathe underwater.[2][4] Combat includes a quick time event (QTE) feature that is initiated when the player has weakened a strong foe. Shortly after the appearance of an on-screen prompt—the circle button—the player performs actions on the control device. It allows limited control of Kratos during the QTE cinematic sequence. If the player succeeds, the battle ends, whereas failure usually results in damage.[5] During the game, the player finds chests containing orbs colored green, blue, and red. Green orbs replenish health, blue orbs replenish magic and red orbs replenish experience—for upgrading weapons and magic, making new and more powerful attacks available.[6] The player also collects red orbs by killing foes and destroying certain inanimate objects.[2] Gorgon Eyes and Phoenix Feathers, which increase the maximum amount of Health and Magic respectively, return from previous installments and are found in plain, neutrally-colored chests.[2] The player must find five Eyes or Feathers to increase each meter's maximum.[6] The quick-time sex mini-game from previous installments returns in the form of an encounter with two women.[7] The Challenge mode, which requires players to complete a series of specific tasks (e.g. Burn 50 soldiers with the Efreet), also returns—renamed the Challenge of Hades (five trials)—and is unlocked by completing the game. The player may unlock bonus costumes, behind-the-scenes videos, and art galleries as rewards. Completion of each difficulty level additionally unlocks various rewards.[8]
